Khaby Lame Interview Highlights: Going Global Without Saying a Word
Khaby Lame on silent comedy, his gesture, brand deals, film and UNICEF work, drawn from his public interviews, with every quote sourced and dated.

Khaby Lame says silence is what lets his comedy travel. He told CNN in 2021 that his palms-up gesture came by chance, but staying silent was a deliberate choice to reach as many people as possible, and he still calls silence a universal language. His formula is simple: answer an overcomplicated “life hack” with the obvious fix. That wordless format made him TikTok’s most-followed person and carried him into brand deals, film and UNICEF work.
Khaby Lame is the rare creator whose work doesn’t need translating. He doesn’t speak in his videos, so a viewer in Dakar, Milan or Shanghai gets the joke at the same moment, and his explanation of that choice has barely changed in five years of interviews: keep it simple, keep it silent, and let the expression do the work.
This post is for creators who want to know why a wordless format travels, for marketers weighing global creator partnerships, and for fans curious how a laid-off factory worker became TikTok’s most-followed person. It covers his start, his format, how he finds ideas and makes videos, his advice, brands, film and what he’s doing as of October 2026.
Some of his interviews were given in Italian and published in translation; we quote the English each outlet printed.
Who is Khaby Lame?
Khaby Lame is an Italian-Senegalese comedian and content creator, born Khabane Lame in Senegal in 2000, who became the most-followed person on TikTok with wordless videos that mock overcomplicated “life hacks”.
His family moved to Italy when he was a year old, and he spent most of his life in public housing, CNN reported in 2021; in 2020 he was living with his parents in Chivasso, near Turin. He passed Charli D’Amelio as TikTok’s most-followed person on June 22, 2022, and still held that spot with 162.9 million followers as of September 17, 2026, according to Wikipedia’s list of the most-followed TikTok accounts. He became an Italian citizen in August 2022, The Guardian reported.

How did Khaby Lame get started?
“When I started making videos, people told me to get a proper job … But I continued to make videos because that’s what I like doing, even though no one was watching them.”
— Khaby Lame, Forbes, September 2023
He was laid off from his factory job in March 2020, as Italy locked down, Variety and AFP reported. His first TikTok went up on March 15, 2020, according to Quartz, and Highsnobiety reported that his first month brought nine views and two followers. His early clips showed him dancing, watching video games and doing comedy stunts, CNN reported.
“At first, I used to make fun of myself in my videos … Then, I experimented with different formats, all ironic, taking inspiration from real life.”
— Khaby Lame, Highsnobiety (text interview translated from Italian), September 2023
He told Highsnobiety he used to spend at least three hours a day online looking for the right content. His first stitch came in November 2020, and his first truly viral hit in April 2021, Highsnobiety reported, when he answered a man carving a banana with a cleaver by peeling one by hand.
The lesson isn’t the lockdown. It’s that he tried formats for months in front of almost nobody, then committed to the one that worked. He hasn’t said much about early mistakes; this account of trying formats until one stuck is the closest he comes.

Why doesn’t Khaby Lame talk in his videos?
“The type of gesture came by chance, but the silence didn’t. I thought of a way to reach as many people as possible. And the best way was not to speak.”
— Khaby Lame, CNN, October 2021
He told CNN the idea came from seeing life-hack videos circulating and wanting to bring some simplicity to them. The format rarely changes: someone does an everyday job the hard way, then Lame does it the obvious way, such as peeling a banana by hand, and finishes with his arms out and palms up. CNN read the gesture as a wordless duh.
“The funniest part of my content is the silence … Silent comedy speaks a language that everybody in the world can understand.”
— Khaby Lame, Highsnobiety (text interview translated from Italian), September 2023
Silence also removes a ceiling most creators never notice: a spoken video only reaches people who understand the language. Lame told AFP in 2024 that he knew the gesture had gone global when he saw people on television, and Real Madrid players such as Vinícius Júnior, doing it.
How does Khaby Lame decide what to make next?
“They know I’m the one who solves problems so they tag me or mention me and they’re like, ‘Khaby it’s your turn, solve this problem because we need you.’”
— Khaby Lame, CNN, October 2021
His audience does much of the scouting. CNN reported that fans around the world regularly send him videos of simple tasks done in complicated ways, so viewers supply the setups and he supplies the punchline. The format has widened since: Forbes reported that in 2023 he made skits with Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise. The engine is still the same wordless reaction.
The transferable idea is a format your viewers can feed. If your audience knows exactly what kind of setup you respond to, they will start tagging you in them.
How does Khaby Lame make a video?
“When I started making videos during COVID-19, the idea was to make people smile. There was no strategy. I would wake up, eat, and make a video. I did not have any special camera, just a very bad phone.”
— Khaby Lame, at the 1 Billion Followers Summit in Dubai, as reported by Gulf Today, January 2024
On the same panel he said he had no lighting either, so he used the white glow of YouTube on a computer screen. He told CNN in 2021 that his biggest purchase since becoming famous was an iPhone 12, to shoot better videos.
Highsnobiety observed in 2023 that his camera work had improved but that much of his content still looked phone-shot and felt organic. In his format, the idea is the production value: a stitch needs a phone, a clear setup, a reaction and a payoff, not a crew.

What does Khaby Lame say works on TikTok now?
“I think people like my videos for the expression, for the simplicity there, because it’s a simple video. And then the effect that I don’t talk is a universal language. All the people can understand and be part of the comedy without having words.”
— Khaby Lame, TODAY.com, August 2024
“One of the values of my videos is that silence can reach everybody … You don’t have to talk to make content. My videos are accessible for all countries — you don’t have to know the language, because I don’t speak.”
— Khaby Lame, China Daily, September 2025
Years after his breakthrough, the point hasn’t moved: simplicity plus silence. He gave the China Daily interview during a September 2025 tour of China, where, the paper reported, he turned street encounters and food tastings into wordless stories.
Ranking matters less to him than you might expect: he told CNN in 2021 that he didn’t care whether he was first or fourth on TikTok, and that he started making videos to make people laugh during lockdown. Our Charli D’Amelio interview covers the creator he overtook in 2022.
The useful test for your own work: does a video still land with the sound off, for someone who doesn’t speak your language? Many videos don’t need to, but for a global audience a visual payoff travels further than a spoken one. Compare our Zach King interview for another short-form creator’s answers to the same questions.
What advice does Khaby Lame give new creators?
“Be you, be original, and just start. Don’t harbor doubts in your mind. Don’t think, ‘What will people say?’ People will have an opinion on everything, but that should not bother you as a content creator.”
— Khaby Lame, 1 Billion Followers Summit, as reported by Gulf Today, January 2024
Asked on the same panel about negative comments, he said they didn’t bother him, describing the people who post them as hiding behind their phones. He told Highsnobiety in 2023 that the important thing is to stay true to your identity and do what you love.
His advice is short because his approach is: start, be recognizably yourself, ignore the noise. The harder part, as his own start shows, is staying with it while almost nobody is watching.
What does Khaby Lame say about working with brands?
“I turn down most requests … I want to work clean. I’ve never worked with an alcohol company, cigarettes or anything that’s bad for you because a lot of kids follow me.”
— Khaby Lame, Forbes, September 2023
Forbes estimated in 2023 that he had grossed $16.5 million since June 2022 from deals including Hugo Boss, Binance, the bank QNB, Fortnite and a State Farm Super Bowl campaign, and that he charged $750,000 to feature a product in a TikTok and Instagram post.
Hugo Boss is his longest-running partner. He signed a multi-year deal in 2022, the Associated Press reported, and that February he appeared in the brand’s rebrand campaign filmed in the Dubai desert, Vogue Business reported. Fortune reported that Boss paid him $450,000 to walk in a Milan Fashion Week show and post a TikTok.
Wordless content suits global brands, because one clip works in every market. If you’re a brand, check fit as carefully as he says he does; our guide on how to vet a YouTube creator covers the questions. If you’re a creator, disclose every paid integration, as our guide to disclosing affiliate links and sponsorships explains.
Behind the deals, he co-founded a creative agency, Iron Corporation, with his then manager, Alessandro Riggio, Fortune reported in 2022. The Italian news site Open reported in November 2024 that they had split, with Lame selling his half of the agency and setting up his own company with his older brother; AFP named Nicola Paparusso as his manager in 2024.
In January 2026, Forbes Australia reported, citing an SEC filing, that he had sold Step Distinctive Limited, which manages his brand and commercial activities, to the Hong Kong-based holding company Rich Sparkle in an all-stock deal valued at $975 million. He had owned 49% of it, and as part of the deal he authorized the use of his face, voice and behavioral models to build an AI “digital twin” for multilingual livestream shopping. Because it was paid in shares, its value depends on the buyer’s share price.
How is Khaby Lame moving into film?
“I’m practicing acting more. I don’t want to stay in social media all my life.”
— Khaby Lame, Variety, June 2024
He sat on the Cannes Film Festival’s TikTok short film jury in 2022 and became a judge on Italia’s Got Talent in 2023, Variety reported, and his directorial debut, the documentary short I Am Khabane, premiered at the Taormina Film Festival in 2023, according to Forbes. In 2024 he had a cameo in Bad Boys: Ride or Die and fronted Khaby Is Coming to America, a three-part Tubi travel series in which, he told Variety, he had to talk.
He told Variety the series was training for his first starring role, in a spy comedy with the working title 00Khaby, and that his dream is to win an Oscar. As of October 2026, we found no release date for 00Khaby.
AFP described Los Angeles as his new home in 2024. In June 2025, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it had detained him at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas for immigration violations, saying he had entered the country on April 30 and stayed beyond the date his visa allowed; ICE said he was granted voluntary departure and had left the US, according to NPR. He had not commented publicly at the time, the Associated Press reported.
What is Khaby Lame working on now?
As of October 2026, much of his work happens beyond the app, though he told AFP in 2024 that he would keep making TikTok videos.
“From my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children can thrive when they are given a chance and opportunity.”
— Khaby Lame, UNICEF press release, January 2025
UNICEF named him a Goodwill Ambassador on January 31, 2025, after a four-day visit to Senegal in which he met children at a shelter in Dakar and visited an inclusive school in Ziguinchor. In July 2025 TIME included him on its first TIME100 Creators list.
“This commitment reflects my desire to support young African talent, in sports and far beyond. Dakar 2026 will offer our continent the opportunity to reveal its best and inspire young people in Africa and around the world.”
— Khaby Lame, on being named a Dakar 2026 ambassador, as published by Africanews, April 2026
He is an ambassador for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which run from October 31 to November 13, 2026, and organizers said he would take part in the torch relay. In May 2026 he made a cameo in the James Bond video game 007 First Light, gesturing at a signpost when Bond asks for directions, IGN reported. The AI twin agreed in January is meant to make multilingual content, an odd turn for a creator famous for saying nothing.
